On February 3, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum held a phone conversation to address escalating trade tensions. Following the discussion, both leaders agreed to a one-month suspension of the proposed 25% U.S. tariffs on Mexican imports. In return, Mexico committed to deploying 10,000 National Guard troops to its northern border to combat drug trafficking and illegal immigration.
Additionally, both nations pledged to collaborate on preventing the smuggling of high-powered weapons into Mexico. This temporary reprieve provides a window for further negotiations aimed at resolving trade and security concerns between the two countries.
